The Quarterback Project Still Doesn't Impact the Chiefs

I paid no attention at all to the draft, but deep inside I knew it was going on, and that it is still going on. Even though the next Chiefs game is months away, I have to add a post now because what happened yesterday and earlier today is the essence of what happens to any NFL team's game day.

I was working hard to avoid finding out for fear of abject disappointment, but today I did hear who we got. I discovered that we'd gotten Dontari Poe with our first pick. I know absolutely nothing about him except that he is a defensive tackle. I also know we got an offensive lineman with our second pick. I have a lot of thoughts about this right now that I'm not going to put here. I'll have lots of blog space to get into it after Game One in September.

The only thing I want to say is this.

This is yet another time in the long history of the Kansas City Chiefs franchise that we did not get a highly drafted quarterback that will turn into that one guy that will get us to the promised land. Once again, as I articulated with great attention to detail, the Chiefs have never ever drafted and developed a good solid quarterback -- the only team in the entire National Football League to never have done that.

Now another year has passed when it just could not happen that we could possibly be blessed to have that guy drop into our first-round selection in the draft. It is indeed a curse that we simply cannot shake. Our brand-spankin' new DL and OL guys may be spectacular for us, that's not the point.

The point is that we still don't have The Man.

I simply cannot tell you how disappointed I am right now.

I will always be faithful to my Chiefs. I will always hope for the best and eagerly expect Poe to lead the defense in shutting out every team they play this year. I'm all for him, all for them, all for spectacularly wonderful Chiefs success.

But the weight of the Quarterback Project and its meaning is just too overwhelming.

I can't help but think  -- as I have for some time now -- that the worst team is not the one with the worst record but the one with the mediocre one. The Colts get to enjoy the services of Peyton Manning for years, and after one single year they really suck and are able to snatch up the next Peyton Manning in Andrew Luck. Meanwhile the Chiefs are just bad enough to miss the playoffs but good enough to wallow back in the middle of the draft where they simply cannot get the guy they really need.

That quarterback.

Again. Again again again we can't get him.

The disappointment is just too much right now...
